Subj: What about ligatures?
Date: Tue, 29 Mar 1994 10:39:00 -0500

I don't think we've had a discussion on ligatures recently.

A few years ago I tried this wierd looking thing with
rivets & big rubber pads. It worked so much better that I
had to buy one (in spite of the $60 price). The improvement over
the Banade ligature was obvious to all the reed players in the pit.

It makes my horn speak much better in all ranges. Not
only does it improve tone and make it easier to play, but it
also allows me a bit more flexibility with reeds. This is
especially helpful when you're doubling and the reed dries
out and you have an exposed part to play.

I could look it up, but I believe its called a Winston.

I did a show in DC recently and sat next to a fairly opinionated
local clarinet teacher who had one of the ligatures that is made
from a band of black plastic/cloth, again with a single screw
to tighten it. We swapped and he didn't feel any diff. I
didn't really feel any difference either, but the guy sitting
behind us felt that my ligature produced a 'darker' sound than
the other one.
