Dear Alan Wagner,
I'm no expert either - it's just that I've had to work out a lot of things
about the bass for myself. Most of the reputable clarinetists I see regularly
either don't take it seriously or hate and fear it. I use LaVoz reeds when I
can get them - grade 3, but I sand them down considerably around the tip and
upper sides. They look terrible when you buy them, but they tend to work - for
me, anyway, on a VanDoren (!!) mouthpiece - I forget the model number. Trying
to buy reeds ORIGINALLY of the right strength has resulted in the acquisition
of squeaky rubbish. My instrument is an old Noblet (not "professional" grade at
all), which didn't even work when I bought it - very cheap.
