I've long enjoyed the LP recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet
by Reginald Kell and the Fine Arts Quartet, done in the early
1960s. But I've long heard that a recording he did a quarter
century before that with the Busch Quartet was even better.

I haven't made a direct comparison between the two yet, but I
finally am able to. That Kell/Busch recording, originally
made in October 1937, turned up on a CD at Tower this week. It's
EMI Classics (CDH 7649322). The disc also includes a 1937 recording
of Brahms' String Quartet Op. 51 No. 1 from 1932. The sound was
much better than I expected, as I heard it casually the first time.
I didn't notice how obtrusive any side-change breaks from the original
78s were within movements.

The CD was midprice (about $10.00 without any special sale pricing).

In other clarinet CD news, Tower had in stock the two cheap Naxos CDs with
Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, "Skittles" Trio, three Quartet arrangements,
and a completion of an Allegro for clarinet, basset horn, and string trio.
