Even in musicals, it's pretty rare for the clarinetist to be featured
on-stage. As it happens one of those shows, "Candide" (score by Leonard
Bernstein) is playing right now locally for James in Redwood City. In one
number the old lady with one buttock (it's a very strange show!) laments
about her misfortunes while a sailor plays clarinet on stage. An unnamed
lurker on this list is playing the solo (I'm playing second, thank God);
Claudia Zornow has also played this solo in the past.
Other musicals that come to mind with an on-stage clarinet are "Rags" and
sometimes "Fiddler on the Roof" depending on how it is staged.
Regards,
Jordan
