I'm interested in purchasing a metal clarinet also-- I've been wanting
to tinker with old 20's and 30's movie music and tin-pan alley's
idea of what "jazz" was. Metal clarinets were used pretty extensively
back then, especially since recording pickups couldn't catch much
in the chalimeau range. I have a freind who collects old 78's
and some of the clarinet sounds were truly, well, "unique". BTW,
violins had similar problems and every once in a while you can
find a violin with a metal gramophone bell.
Another friend calls 'em "National Clarinets." I'm following this
discussion with great interest....
