Yes indeed--it appears that the flutists of the Concertgebouw in fact use
them. My wife has one--the point I was making--the wooden flute had many
problems of cracking etc. The use of metal solved much of that. The clarinet
in metal could be just as fine as the flute in wood (now metal). But our
perceptions of the metal clarinet causes one many times to "listen with the
eye and not the ear". Yes, the thicknes or size is strange--but Haynes the
Boston Flute Maker solved that with his double walled model. The metal
Selmer that I have does indeed look a bit strange--but it in no way feels
strange in my hand--but we all perceive these things in our own way.
