Subj: How much should I pay for a nice metal clarinet?
Date: Tue, 15 Mar 1994 09:48:10 -0500

I was at an antique store this weekend that happened to have 4 metal
clarinets in the window. They all looked like they could be made playable
(needed pads, corks, and gunk removed from rods and holes). 3 of them
were silver plated student models, but the 4th was lacquered and was a
White (King?) from Cleveland.

A) its my old home town, so I liked it

B) it was a pretty little thing without green splotches and it had a nice
engraved logo on the bell

I get the impression these things are not rare. They were asking $135 and
my sense is that I could get it for under $100. I've never looked at these
before, but after that discussion of materials a few months back, I've gotten
curious about metal clarinets.

What's the going rate for a non-student model metal clarinet?
It would be an attractive decoration for the studio, but what would I have
if I tried to make it playable? (I can imagine spending well over $100 for
someone to do it and I can't quite imagine myself finishing the job)
