I have a slight feeling of deja vu with this topic. But, since it seems
to be generating some genuine interest (again) I thought I'd repeat the
comments of a Vandoren rep doing a workshop on the subject. The point
was raised that when reeds leave the Vandoren plant and then travel to
another country, climactic changes take place that can cause some change
in the reeds. His recommendation for ALL fresh reeds was to briefly place
each on a piece of fine sandpaper (I assume 400-600 grade) which in turn is
placed on a piece of glass, and briefly moved in a circle for a
moment to flatten any curve that has developed, and that this should be
all that is required. He also suggested maintaining at least 4 "active"
reeds at all times and rotating among these so that each reed is given some
rest (I assume something like allowing fields to lay fallow)!
