I was at a concert given by Alan Hacket [et al.] sometime in the 70s at which I
seem to remember his using a clarinet with a transducer of some kind fitted
into the side of the barrel. This was used to produce multiple sounds, echo
effects and the like via an amplifier. Incidentally, there is a street musician
who plays frequently in the centre of Oxford on a flute with a similar setup.
Using a system of this kind clearly requires a surgical operation on the
instrument.
