Thanks for the welcome and the advice, Dan and Bernie. I have
"Out to Lunch" and enjoy it a lot. I'm constantly amazed
at what Eric Dolphy can do with a bass clarinet. My dad
had some great Benny Goodman records and that's what got
me interested in clarinet jazz. According to Leonard Feather,
the reason jazz clarinet ended with Goodman was that there was
very little that could be advanced beyond him. I don't know
about that, but there aren't too many jazz players that
wonderful to listen to.
There is a new jazz clarinetist whose name I've been trying to
track down. He's fairly young and also plays Klezmer music.
Apparently he's been doing some amazing things with jazz clarinet
and I'd like to track down a recording. BTW, if you can
stand "popular" music at all, Trance Mission is a world beat
group with tabla, digeridoo, clarinet (by Beth Custer) and oboe.
It makes for a pretty amazing sound.
