Well, I know this topic is dying (dead) fast, but I finally have some real-life
experience to add to it, so here we go...

All this debate about vibrato and it's relationship to clarinet and sax playing
has made me look for it now. I just attended a Wind Ensemble concert in my
hometown this evening. The concert wasn't very good for the group, but one
of the pieces was the Glazunov (sp?) Concerto for Alto Sax. While I like the
piece, I really didn't like their rendition of it - very flat and lifeless.

The soloist was a sax player I know fairly well. I've heard him play before,
and he is a good player. However, I was in the back of the auditorium and it
was clear to me that he was using jaw (or is it lip?) vibrato. Didn't really
like the sound of it too much, either...but that's a subjective thing.

It seems most of the good sax players in the area (Quad Cities, Iowa) use some
form of jaw vibrato - some wider than others.

Now that you know what the middle of nowhere uses, feel free to do something
else...
