I think my subscription to the list KLARINET was somehow zapped--but it
would appear that things are returning to normal. I had put out a bit of
information about clarinet choices--in reading Lefevre's 14 articles included
in his Methode of 1805 (adapted Paris Conserv) he tells the contemporary
clarinetist that a total of seven instruments are needed for orchestral
work. He does say that one can get by if his C is convertible to B and
his Bb is convertible to A. It would appear that the C Bb pairing was the
standard orchestral set for the late 18th and early 19th century. I would
assume than that the player would decide in some cases upon which "flavour"
instrument he would perform various passages.
