According to Lefevre in his Methode of 1802--the orchestral clarinetist
would normally require seven clarinets to play in the orchestra. He tells
us that you can get by with two--if your C is convertible to B and your
Bb instrument convertible to A--my French is not real good but I can
pretty much make this out. So it would appear that at one time the
B was expected of many--and the standard orchestral pairing for a player
would be C and Bb with conversion pieces to accomplish the other keys.
