My mention of the A clarinet was given in the modern day A--yes I realize
that pitch was close to a half step away from now--just ask singers who
have to do some of the arias--but unless one has a reproduction instrument--
not the most likely for most--the A clarinet is still the object of desire
in performing the concerto quintet, etc. I know that many of us "learned"
the concerto on our one and only Bb with a transposed orchestral reduction.
I was not speaking a an historical sense--I also have read reports of a
clarinettist from Italy who did all of his work on a Bb full-Boehm including
all A music--including the Mozart. That would be a trip wouldn't it?
