Ron Monson's assertion that any clarinet in A should be considered an
acceptable instrument for the Mozart is interesting. The complexity
of the argument increases if we consider that the key of A in Mozart's
day was noticably lower in pitch than our key of A today. No, I'm not
suggesting that we play the piece on A-flat clarinets! But we should
try to stay as close to Mozart's conception of the key as possible --
he did associate certain extra-musical concepts with key.
