Klarinet Archive - Posting 000424.txt from 1994/02

I have in front of me a rather fascinating article by Walter Lear--25
years with the BBC (that is 25 years with them when he wrote the article in
1957) and then went on to Sub-Principal and Bass Clarinet in the Royal Phil-
harmonic (yes,,the Beecham years). Anyway, the article is entitled
ON MULTIPLE PLAYING (Don't Call it "Doubling"!!) (The quotes and parenthesis
are his not mine). This is followed by Let Us Be Serious About the Saxophone
by Les Gilbert. These articles and many others appeared in the 1957-58 edition
of the Woodwind Book published by Boosey & Hawkes ed by Bryan Manton-Myatt.
So what you say? Well if you can get a copy of this rarity via inter-library
loan I suggest you (doublers,etc--yes we really all must be) get a copy.
Failing that I will make some copies and forward them around to various
subscribers to read--then let some interesting discussion follow. It is
really interesting to read about having to keep up on the multiples to work, et
c. Here is a reprint of an article from a book published 37 years ago--by
someone who wrote about the need 25 years before that.
Sorry this is rather rambling but I have been here going on 12 hours and I
must run off to hearth, home and Shetland Sheep dogs.
