Part of the problem I have been told with boxwood is the material and its
ability to hold a great deal of posts and other attachments to the body.
As the clarinet added more and more mechanism and more hardware had to be
added to the body to accomodate this the boxwood proved not to be the ideal
medium. Now this could be an old buffalo bagle (bagel) that has been passed
down from one instrument maker to the next but it does seem that later versions
of the "ebony agony tube" have a lot of hardware attached. It is food for
thought.
