Boxwood is a wood which used to be easy to obtain and is easy to turn. These are
probably the overriding reasons why it was used so extensively. A fair
proportion of the boxwood intruments in the Bate Collection here in Oxford seem
to be irremediably bent, which seems to support Rockstro to an extent, though
I realise he is not noted for the temperance of his views. My comment re Mozart
is probably highly speculative, but earlier in the 18th century flutes and
flute-players attracted a lot of opprobrium for bad intonation, largely for
fundamental acoustic reasons, no doubt, but I find it hard to believe that
there were not also constructional causes.
