I am having at least one and probably both clarinets overhauled this
summer and the issue of Valentino pads came up yesterday in a conversation
with Clark Fobes when I went to pick up two instruments on which he
had been working.

I have absolutely no experience with these pads and have to rely on the
opinions of others so I have been reading these notes with great care
and interest.

Fobes recommended against their use and suggested that he had not had
been successful in their use. He did not amplify. Perhaps when he is
on the board he can say why.

On the other hand, Dave Erkhe, clarinet teacher at the Univ. of Nevada,
Reno, is very positive on these pads. So I am still open minded about
their use though leaning away from them slightly at the moment.
