I played a concert or two with him as well--but no--there are various attach-
ments you can insert in the bell to extend the tubing for the A. At times
a creative bassooner (only in rehearsal we hope) can insert various expandable
rubber items (such as a glove or whatever). It makes for a spectacular ending
but would never do in a concert performance--especially with that piece. I
can go out on a limb and say the Nielsen Kvintet is amongst a half dozen works
for the medium that deserve beatification--but I won't.
