Hello I'm new here on this conference if you don't mind me jumping in here.

I never felt that just smearing a little grease on the cork was quit enough.
I think it's important to work it in with your fingers weather you mess up your
jeans or not. On a quality professional instrument, such as a buffet R13, the w
earing down of the cork shouldn't be a problem. That would only happen if the
barrell joint wasn't machined properly. Besides I'd rather replace a cork now a
nd then than bend a key because the cork was to dry.
