We have in England and (so far) unmentioned the Bate collection at the
University of Oxford music faculty and the amazingly old-fashioned (when I saw
it last) collection at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, south London, which
includes two examples of that mysterious (?) single-reed instrument the
Octavin. This
latter has (or had) all the traditional English museum features of bad
lighting, over-filled wooden cabinets, and hand-written labels
in brown ink. There is (or was, or has been) a separate catalogue for the
instrument collection. The museum
also possesses other delights, such as an aquarium, numerous implements and
Things from New Guinea, Central Asia, etc., and a functional beehive with a
glass side ...
