Now that Spring is in the air and we are planning short trips for the Summer,
there is a small collection of old woodwind instruments at (of all places)
Letchworth State Park in the Southern Tier of western New York. I had been
in touch with the then-editor of the now-defunct ClariNetwork about doing
an article about these instruments (but never got around to it before the
journal folded). The collection includes some 19th century clarinets and
what might be the first American-made oboe ever! The park is quite nice
and seeing this unusual collection of instruments in this kind of
museum-in-the-woods setting is worth the trip.
