The very first surviving clarinets have the speaker tube projecting into
the bore. The external tube was a recent experiment. I'm not sure why it
flopped, but there is every reason to expect that it's not just the tube's
length that counts. One of the modifications on Buffet's Elite is that
the tube protrudes even further into the bore than has this far been the
case.
