I own one of those--an old Buffet with the speaker vent on the top--the
idea (a good one I think) was to eliminate the need to place a vent tube
into the bore of the instrument. With the vent for the register at the
back (as is now common) a tube must be placed in the bore to keep moisture
from entering the vent.
