I said that certain brands are "reputed" to cause cork to deteriorate.
I do not know what the objective basis of this belief is, but can report
that it adherents generally regard "Micro Cork Grease" as the safest bet.
This stuff comes in little round tin cans rather than in the lipstick
type containers.

My own instincts tell me that it would probably be just as well to steer
clear of the perfumed stuff, if for no other reason than a strong
suspicion that it is identical to various lip balms which are marketed in
identical containers and contain additives which can serve no
demonstrable purpose in the present context. The only nonperfumed brand
that I know of is "Leblanc".

Since I am able to replace corks I don't worry too much about this, but
can't claim ever to have seen a worn cork which I know for certain got
that way from inappropriate cork grease. What I have seen are plenty of
instruments which have generally gotten good and gunked up from the use
of vaseline and I certainly wouldn't recommend it instead of cork grease
(said while bracing for a deluge of I've-been-using-vaseline-with-good-
results-for-years replies).

Judged purely on the basis of its lubricating properties, my personal
preference is for Vandoren cork grease. It lubricates well, doesn't end up
all over the place, and lasts longer than the other stuff I've tried.

I don't think the subject is worth a major fret.
