I certainly don't claim to be an expert on anatomy, but it's my
understanding that in inhaling, it is the diaphragm that expands down,
thus causing the rib cage to expand, thus causing the lungs to take in
air. During exhalation, the diaphragm rises up, and the reverse happens.

This may not be a precisely technical description; my point is that it is
the diaphragm itself that initiates the inhalation/exhalation. Sorry if
I'm getting off topic.
