There are several important musical instrument collections in the United
States. I'll post exact references to the published lists of them. The
Shrine to Music Museum in Vermillion South Dakota is perhaps the most
amazing in terms of the amount of high quality Elkhart material that they
have. The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History
has also got quite a bit of relevant and important material.
