Selmer used to offer both the Low A and High F# as options.
"Saxophone Journal" had an article recently describing a
Mark VI alto with both. Apparently, this was one of just
a very, very few.

I'm not sure why you'd want a low A on an alto. The guy in
the story bought his because he didn't know any better. For
playing bari music an octave up? It could be helpful in very
rare instances where you had to transpose a part and needed
another half-step (but no more). The foot trick works fine
on an alto (I wear 8 1/2, larger sizes might have probs).

Again, its not a clarinet issue, but I know that Dan likes a
good heated discussion: Any opinions on the relative desirability
of a Low A on a bari? Many arrangers assume that it is avail, but
I tend to agree with Gerry Mulligan that the extra tubing
destroys the best qualities of the horn.

-->We have an ancient Buescher curved soprano here in our collection and it is
-->quite a good instrument. I have seen students here from time to time and
-->certainly at Northwestern with low A altos--a rarity I believe. I have also
-->seen straight altos--not very often and not real convenient. I also have in
-->my own collection an albert system curved soprano clarinet. It looks like a
-->baby bass--curved "neck" and upturned metal bell. Probably someone's idea of
-->the ideal marching instrument.
