Cary,

You're right that the first conception of the soprano was curved
but, I meant to imply (sorry I was very unclear) that when they began
to become popular in "legit" contexts since that is primarily what we
are discussing they were curved. Some of the first writing for soprano
in the military band was by Percy Grainger who is often shown in photos
holding a curved soprano saxophone. Of course in the jazz context Sidney
Bechet (one of the earliest jazz soprano players) did play a straight
soprano as do most of us today.
