I am a new member of this list. I am a professor of Operations
Management at Michigan State University who is also learning how to play
the clarinet (again from one of Elsa's students). As a relative novice
and learner, I was fascinated by recent discussion on vibrato and old
clarinets. I have a few questions which I would like to pose to the
group as a whole for their input:

1. What type of solution would you recommend for wiping down the
outside of the clarinet? This question comes out of the recent
discussion on how to maintain old clarinets. Currently, I am using a
silicon cloth that was recommended to me by the manager at my clarinet
store here in town (Meridian Winds). Yet, my concern is that this may
be the best treatment for my clarinet.
2. I am considering getting a backup clarinet for myself. I am
currently using a Buffet R13. Any recommendations for a reasonably
priced, good quality clarinet. I am willing to compromise cost for
quality.
3. I have heard about the magazine Clarinet. How does one subscribe?
How much does it cost per year? Is it worth it?

Any comments to these questions would be greatly appreciated?

(I wonder why my clarinet teachers keep recommending that I take up
cello. They must be impressed with my abilities. ;-).)
