Friends,

This is one myth that needs to be debunked once and for all. I have
heard players--fine professional players--talk about this idea of
clarinets losing their responsiveness over time. I challenge you
to go ahead and play an instrument which has supposedly lost its
character and responsiveness. I guarantee that YOU--an unbiased
judge since you'd be trying the instrument for the first time--
would find it completely acceptable.

Take care of your instrument. Have an overhaul if necessary. But
don't fall victim to the "blown out" myth. Once that idea enters
your thinking you'll be slightly ill at ease every time you play
your horn. You'll think, "Hmmm...maybe there is something to this
blowing out idea." But, it's all in your mind...and once that little
doubt gets in there it is hard to erase.

If you feel the instrument is losing its former outstanding qualities,
invest a little time and money in getting it worked on. A talented
repair person can do wonders.
