Well, my short two cents' worth...

My clarinet is from the 50's. It's an old Buffet, and it plays GREAT! I've
had four or five people try it out, and they have all liked it better than
theirs. It's been kept up well, though, and before I got it, it was played
regularly by a symphony player, so mayhaps that had something to do with it. I
always keep it in good playing condition - as any respecting player should, but
I have had no problems whatsoever with mine.
