-->I have had several vocal teachers that claimed the vibrato is
-->a natural outcome when everything is working correctly and
-->together during vocal production. So maybe that is where
I'm not buying that. Its a nice romantic explanation, but I believe
that vibrato is learned, like most other vocalizations. If you never
hear it, its very unlikely that you'll do it.

-->the vibrato crept in; as an attempt to imitate singing. Just a
-->thought. By the way, I was the first student any of them
-->had taught who had to "learn" how do do a vibrato while singing.
Don't feel bad, I don't sing with vibrato either. I've been told
by my family to stick to instrumental music, so I don't feel the
loss. ;-)

My belief is that the other students heard vibrato and unconsciously
imitated it. Some clarinet performers might also be doing it
unconsciously. I could be wrong, but I don't believe that vibrato
is instinctive.

Its universal appeal is fascinating, though. Is there something innate
within us that is attuned to vibrato? Is vibrato common in non-Western
music?

-->I was taught and use multiple techniques for producing vibrato
-->when playing clarinet at "appropiate times".
Does anyone teach anything but lip vibrato for sax?
I believe that I'm using my diaphragm for flute (throat
vibrato gets kind of warbly), but is that universally accepted?
Is clarinet special among the woodwinds in having more than
one appropriate form of vibrato?
