I have had several vocal teachers that claimed the vibrato is
a natural outcome when everything is working correctly and
together during vocal production. So maybe that is where
the vibrato crept in; as an attempt to imitate singing. Just a
thought. By the way, I was the first student any of them
had taught who had to "learn" how do do a vibrato while singing.

I was taught and use multiple techniques for producing vibrato
when playing clarinet at "appropiate times".
