When I studied with David Hite, he suggested a sort of wind vibrato in
approaching the Templeton "Pocket-Sized Sonata" because he felt that
it created less pitch variation than does lip vibrato. In the years since,
I find that I use lip vibrato when playing jazz, and occasionally when
I play some of the "flash and trash solos (only a little, however).
Regarding key vibrato -- some early flute methods (Baroque period)
describe a finger vibrato.
