Scott, I think you must amplify if you are speaking of a padded
or non-padded mouthpiece patch.

I have been using non-padded mouthpiece patches forever so as to
avoid eventually putting my front teeth through the mouthpiece. I
tried a padded mouthpiece patch once but found it to be very
uncomfortable and stopped using them. It is a matter of preference,
and I don't know of any studies that support betterness of playing
if one uses a padded mouthpiece patch or not.

I am absolutely confident that your teacher is simply trying to
suggest to you those things that he or she finds usefull and
successful for himself/herself. (This desire to avoid sexist
writing makes for difficult sentence structure at times.) But
I have always felt that success of a mechanism for one person
does not necessarily imply succes of that same mechanism for all
people. I think you should have a heart-to-heart with your
teacher and tell him/her that you are unhappy with the patch that
s/he suggests.
