This is notification number 1.
On March 20, and only on the east coast apparently, there will be
shown a rerun of the Nature TV program entitled "The Tree of Music,"
a show that deals with the African blackwood tree and its use in the
making of clarinets.
The bottom line of the show is that the wood of this tree is becoming
more and more scarce and this impacts the ability to have wooden
clarinets (from this particular wood) in some very short period of
time. But the show is more about clarinet playing than it is about
trees.
The Buffet factory is shown with its piles of wood, and a clarinet
is shown being bored (and ruined, by the way). A very fine French
clarinetist plays on what is seen early in the show as a tree being
chopped down by natives, etc.
How many east coasters will have VCRs to tape the show for those of us
who want a copy but will not have it aired in the midwest or west?
Will you be our surrogates?
If somebody copies it, they can then have a number of copies
run off somewhere and those of us who want one can buy it from that
person, probably very inexpensively. My rough guess is about $20
including tape and labor. I spent about $15 here in Calfornia for
a copy of a tape a while back but maybe the price has gone up since
then.
Any volunteers?
I buzz you again March 1, and March 15. After that, I'm going to
be in Reno playing the Gran Partitta. Isn't that grand (pardon
the pun).
