Last week I mentioned a set of character pieces for clarinet and piano with
the title Drei Schottische Bilder. I said they were by Wolf--not so they
are composed by Carl Loewe (1796-1869) as his Op. 112 and completed in 1850.
The three movements are Die Jungfrau vom See, Der Wanderer auf Bothwell-Castle
and Der Schottenclan. I have a copy of an old copy which was a copy of an
even older copy, (you get the idea). They can be performed all on the Bb
(such version must exist?) or one on Bb, one on C and one on A. The recording
in my collection is on Jecklin 238 (1985) featuring Swiss clarinetist
Rene Oswald and pianist Annette Weisbrod. I have performed these pieces on
recital quite often and they are pleasant--original and sound. Ron Monsen
