It is also inconceivable for me to have spoken to my mother
in the fashion that Mozart used when speaking to his. But we
come from different cultures, Mrs. Mozart and Mrs. Leeson.

Austria and Germany have always had humor based on the toilet.
Mozart's letters, comments, etc. were not an abberation. That
is the way everybody talked (and continues to talk to this day).

It was Mozart's mother who wrote the letter to her husband that
said "Shit in bud until it bursts." That was the kind of bawdy
humor that most Austrian husbands and wives used to each other.
And that phrase, which is used on several occasions in the letters,
isn't even clear to me. What should burst?? The bed? The
person? Why would one want to do such a thing? Why would one
even suggest such a rediculous thing?
Frankly, the more
one thinks about it, the less funny it gets. It rivals the
biologic impossibility of go f--k yourself. But it is as
common today in Germany and Austria as it was then.
