Cary's comments are right on the money. As one moves away from an
epoch it becomes increasingly harder to figure out how one can
peform music from that epoch in ways that are consistent with music
played then, there, and under similar musical circumstances.

Eventually, some conclude that it is so difficult to achieve that end,
that it isn't worth the trouble and thus abandon all efforts to approximate
the musical performances that were enjoyed at that time. That's bad.
And it throws out the baby with the bathwater!!
