For those who are interested here is a brief outline of the
professional clarinet field over here in the home of the pint
of Guinness.

The number of full-time professional players is as follows

35 in the four Army bands
10 in the police band
3 in the National Symphony Orchestra
2 in the Concert Orchestra

You could also count the 2-3 players in the Ulster Orchestra and about 5-10
freelance and jazz players.

Not the best place to find a full-time job I'm afraid :(

All of the Garda (police) band players double on sax out of necessity.

The military bandsmen and bandswomen would have trained in the Royal Academy
of Music or in their local College of Music before joining.

The orchestral players usually trained in The Guildhall in London or
in the Royal National College of Music in Manchester prior to getting their
positions.

As for the number of amateur players, you're guess is as good as mine.
Personally I would have met close to 100 in the Dublin area over the last
20 years. This is because Dublin has at least 7 amateur military or
american high school styled bands. God knows how many there are around the
country.

If anybody's interested in finding out more, please ask. It looks like
I'm the only player on this group in Ireland :)

Have a good one - See y'all Monday ;-)

Niall
