It's nothing personal Dan et al! I have been subscribed to this list for about
three weeks and have found more often than not, (most of the time, in fact)
that the discussions and questions have centered around pedagogy. I have
a good background in pedagogy, but I have to say it's my least favorite thing
to discuss. I feel that every clarinet player, at some point, must learn to
stand on his or her own two feet and say, "This is what I like, this is what
works for me," and find their own best way of utilizing their strengths. I
may not play at all the same set-up, clarinet brand, etc. that you play on, but
if you play well, I'll still enjoy it. Likewise, if YOU really enjoy playing,
and you like your tone, etc. and I think it's awful, I'm not going to tell you
that you should be doing everything the way I do it. If you're my student,
I'll tell you my two cents; otherwise, have at it and more power to you.

My preference in discussion lies in performance practice (alternate trill
fingerings, how to play the opening of Daphnis et Chloe Ste.2, where to breath
in Spohr's first concerto, etc), the dynamics of teaching, current events, and
literature. I haven't had a burning desire to pose any questions yet, but I
will, rest assured. This discussion list is an excellent way to stay connected
to one another and make the world a bit smaller.

My best to all, Charles Hillen at Old Dominion Univ.
