Looky-lookers are common enough on distribution lists. The term normally
used for them is "lurkers". Netiquette suggests that it is often a good
idea for a newcomer to spend a while lurking on a list to get a feel for the
tone of its discussion before wading into the thick of things. It's also
generally regarded as unfortunate, but understandable, that some people
choose to remain lurkers without ever getting actively involved.

I follow the discussions on many lists (and Usenet groups and electronic
conferences) but don't have anything resembling the time or inclination
to participate actively in more than a few of them. As far as I'm
concerned anyone who wants to lurk in the periphery of the clarinet list
is more than welcome to do so, although I do agree that many of the
lurkers could probably provide valuable input to our discussions.
