As has been stated the cost factor. Many of the new materials can and
are worked to much closer tolerances than any wood. The upper Loree Delrin
joint is not "molded" and then worked anymore than a billet of grenadilla
is molded and then worked.

Also the listening with the eye vs the ear. It would take a monumental PR
job to get people serious about composition clarinets. e.g. the short lived
professional metal Selmer and Haynes. By the way the Haynes was a double-
walled instrument. An opening on the top and bottom. Breath was blown into
it to warm it up. I have seen and played one of these--so I am not making

this up. Does anyone out there have a five piece metal sterling clarinet?
