For me Christmas day holds an additional meaning. I was married
on Dec. 25, 1959 and (no pun intended) moved to Bethlehem (in
Pennsylvania). Whenever I tell that absolutely true story, some
wag always ends it with the remark, "And your wife was heavy with
child!".

It was not easy to get florists, caterers, musicians, etc. to do their
thing on Xmas day. But it has made remembering the date very easy.

Last evening the PBS network showed a performance of two Strauss works
by the Chicago SO. They were Don Juan and Tyll Eulenspiegel. That is
one terrific clarinet section they have and Larry Combs is playing better
than ever. The E-flat (or should I say D) part was played by Yueh (did
I spell that correctly?) and he is really a multiple threat player; i.e.,
he plays every one of the clarinets beautifully. I have heard him on
basset horn and bass clarinet, on E-flat and B-flat, and he is sensational
on every one. It's discouraging but enlightening. And as I think about it,
I have not done Tyll in at least 10 seasons. It's time again.
