During ths winter months I keep a tobacco humidifier in my cases. For the
basset horn I have two. It happens here (Kentucky) that as the heat comes
on in the Fin Arts Building the air does not hold as much moisture--nor does
it as it gets colder outside. Even with humidity control (physical plant says
we have such a thing) it gets drier and drier. I find that the moisture in
the case--in the atmosphere--helps. The clarinets do not shrink so that the
rings get loose, etc. This is also a big help with reeds. I find this to be
less of a problem here than when I wintered in Wisconsin or Illinois. A
guide to this would be watching what string players do with that thing they
insert into the body of their instruments--DAMPIT.
