Manuafacturers of clarinets have for years made the body of wood and the
barrel and/or bell of another material. This was usually done on student
instruments. The Laree oboe firm of France indeed has one of their models
with a delrin (SP) upper joint. It cousts more that the wood.
I own several wooden mouthpieces-cocus and cocabolo (sp?) made in Germany
by Hans Zinner. Lux Brahn used wooden mouthpieces on her Wurlitzer clarinets
the last two times she performed on campus for us. Refaced one herself in
masterclass and gave a few of my students a fright.
Wooden mouthpieces, while not in common use in this country certainly have
not gone completely out of fashion.
