Cary, I kept your note on this subject in my to-do file for
a couple of days while I thought about it, but I am still as
at sixes and sevens now as I was when I first read it.

I never thought about the improvisational nuance implications
as a critical factor in selecting which clarinet(s) would achieve
prominence, but the more I thought of your point, the more it
scratched at me as having some serious substance; that is to say,
if improvisation involves a collection of "things" that can be
done to alter melody, life is a lot easier if one has to learn
those things in a few keys rather than many. So one would be
motivated to change clarinets so that those things always get
done (for example) in C, F and G major rather than have to learn
how to do them in (for example) C#, F# and G# major.
