I always thought that the objective, measurable reality
underlying the adjectives "bright" and "dark" was the
relative intensities of higher harmonics in the sound,
i.e., less intense higher harmonics = "dark"

The double-blind experiment related by Dan Leeson suggests
there may be less objective reality than I thought.

Cary Karp: What WAS the definition of dark oboe sound that
was related to you?
